Ford has unveiled its new Universal EV platform, which will be used to launch a midsize electric pickup truck in 2027. The platform supports over-the-air updates and the BlueCruise system for hands-free driving. The universal architecture will also serve as the basis for a whole family of affordable electric vehicles, from vans to three-row SUVs.
The new pickup will be the size of a gasoline Maverick, but with a roomier interior than a Toyota RAV4. The price will start at $30,000, and acceleration to 60 mph will take about 4.5 seconds, which is comparable to the Mustang EcoBoost. Lightweight construction, a reduced number of parts, and the use of LFP batteries will reduce costs.
The new product will replace the current Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair models, the production of which will end in 2026. The new model will be built at a plant in Louisville, USA.
